CBS Sports Network Increasing Boxing Coverage
There was a time in the not-too-distant past where boxing was
relegated to HBO, Showtime, ESPN and a couple of Spanish-language
networks. But with the old guard of Don King going the way of the
dinosaur and Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank seemingly learning
from their mistakes and keeping a keen eye to how the UFC promotes
MMA, the Sweet Science has been on an uptick for quite some
time.
Premier Boxing Champions and a plethora of smaller upstart promotions have taken the farther reaches of the sport by the throat and, spearheaded by the outstretched arms of the PBC on virtually every major network under the sun, boxing has been given a new lease on life.
Enter CBS Sports Network, a cable and satellite sports channel that
has been rebranded and renamed multiple times since 2002. The
CBS-owned station is ready to come out swinging in full support of
the sport and the almost weekly programming will continue Saturday
night.
Promoter Pep Gomez and his “Cancun Boxing” series recently partnered with Neon Star Media to bring the next event to CBSSN on Saturday. Dubbed “Knockouts On Fire,” it will take place at Grand Oasis Cancun the Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico, which will be the promotion’s host for at least the next three events.
The card will be anchored by a featherweight showdown between three-time super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (53-8-2, 26 KOs) and fellow Mexican Andres Gutierrez (34-0-1, 24 KOs).
Exact time of the live broadcast will be announced shortly.
The following week will see CBSSN return to Las Vegas for another edition of “Knockout Night at the D” series from the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The main event will see lightweight Demond Brock (11-3-1, 4 KOs) taking on Chuy Gutierrez (14-0-1, 4 KOs).
Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Promotions will promote the event, which will air live on CBSSN on June 10 starting at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT. FITE will stream the entire undercard live beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.
