Meet Undefeated Lightweight Prospect Christopher Gonzalez
Christopher Gonzalez (5-0, 4-0 Bellator) will return to action as he is slated to clash with mixed martial arts veteran Roger Huerta at the upcoming Bellator 255 card. In his latest battle, “CG” eked out a split decision at the expense of Vladimir Tokov in a three-round 155-pound affair at Bellator 244. While talking with Sherdog, he confessed that he was expecting the judges to be split on the verdict.
“It was a close fight,” he said. “The first round was really close. I don’t think anyone really capitalized and took control of the round one way or another. I could have seen that first round going either way. I think I did enough in the second round to win the second pretty decisively, I think I was in the dominant position. And then in the third round, I think I did enough in the third as well. I was walking forward. I wanted it more, I bit down and I did enough to win the fight.”
Gonzales took on MMA after a successful career in wrestling. The former team USA member and six-time Greco-Roman All-American stated that he wasn’t surprised that Bellator MMA signed him after just one professional fight.
“I have actually talked and spoke with Bellator prior to even having that first official fight,” he added. “We were close to a deal, but it just didn’t work out for, you know, one way or another. Then I got that fight and it was getting harder for me to find competition, I was dealing with a lot of people pulling out last minute and things like that. That definitely made me reevaluate trying to go the independent route. I realized it was going to be super important for my career and development, if I wanted to actually get fights against people who weren’t going to pull out of these smaller shows, to sign with a major organization like Bellator.”
