Guido Cannetti vs. Hugo Viana

Round 1

The bantamweights spend the first 30 seconds circling in the center before Viana clips the southpaw with a hooking punch and tries to follow up with a flying knee. Cannetti dodges it and resets to launch a spinning back kick, but it’s caught by Viana and converted to a takedown. Viana has to spend a few seconds working his way out of a leglock attempt, then spins to take the kneeling Cannetti’s back. Cannetti stands up before the Brazilian can secure back-mount and scrapes Viana off his back with the help of the cage. Viana keeps him pressed against the fence with an underhook, but Cannetti makes him pay for the position with a pair of hard knees to the gut. Viana switches to a body lock as he tries to drag Cannetti back to the canvas with two minutes remaining in the round. Cannetti reverses and lands a few more knees before the fighters are reset by Brazilian referee Osiris Maia. Viana holds his hands low, trying to bait Cannetti into the pocket, then misses with a lunging Superman punch. Viana catches a kick from Cannetti and takes him down again, but the Argentine springs back to his feet.

Round 2

Cannetti opens the round with a hard inside leg kick, backs away and allows Viana to step forward. Cannetti catches him coming in with a left high kick; it’s partially blocked, but it connects enough to daze the Brazilian. Wrapping up his wobbly opponent, Cannetti trips Viana to the ground and lands in side control. Viana puts him back in guard, seemingly having recovered from the head kick. Viana kicks Cannetti away and explodes to his feet, then hits a single-leg takedown of his own. “Ninja” springs back up and holds Viana on the fence, where Cannetti receives a warning from referee Maia for grabbing the fence behind Viana’s back. Viana times a leg kick from Cannetti and kicks out his rear leg, then rushes him against the cage when Cannetti bounces back up. With two minutes left in the round, the bantamweights are in a stalemate on the fence. Referee Maia breaks them up after 30 seconds of clinching in over-under position. Viana tries to walk into the pocket and gets clipped by a nice left hook from Cannetti. The Brazilian changes levels straight after the punch and takes Cannetti to the floor, where he begins unloading with ground-and-pound. Cannetti eats a couple hammer fists before wrapping up Viana’s head and riding out the remainder of the round on bottom.

Round 3

Viana aims a kick at the body but it goes off the forearm of Cannetti. A spinning kick from Viana misses, answered by a spinning kick from Cannetti; the Brazilian closes the distance as Cannetti whirls around and shoves him against the cage. Cannetti lands a knee to the gut as he defends a high double-leg attempt on the fence. Viana switches to a single and runs Cannetti to the ground, but they land in the whizzer and Cannetti bounces back to his feet once again. Viana digs an underhook with his right arm and socks Cannetti with a left; Cannetti responds with a pair of knees to the body as the 135ers continue to work in the clinch. They break midway through the round and reset in the center, where Viana bounces on his toes and Cannetti stands flat-footed. Cannetti lands a body kick and tries to rush in behind it with punches, but Viana slips the follow-up strikes and they wind up back on the fence. Now it’s Cannetti working for a trip takedown, using a high body lock to keep Viana on the cage. Once again, referee Maia breaks up the fighters. Cannetti hits a takedown with just over one minute left in the bout, then hits another 15 seconds later, after Viana gets back up. Cannetti wraps up Viana around the waist and tries to hold him down for the last moments of the fight, but Viana posts and stands just before the horn.

Clint Hester vs. Vitor Miranda

Round 1

Hester moves straight across the cage to clinch with Miranda on the fence, then drops levels and elevates the Brazilian for a slam takedown. Miranda rolls to his knees, his right side flush to the fence, so Hester stands and drives knees to the ribs on the other side. Miranda drops to guard, then goes to his knees again, this time with his left side against the fence. Hester lands a few knees to the side and rear of Miranda, throws a right hand before Miranda powers back to his feet. In the clinch, Miranda throws a hard knee which appears to hurt Hester. The American shoots for a takedown with no power behind it and gets stuffed to the mat by Miranda, who postures up in Hester’s guard and begins unloading with huge ground-and-pound. When the assault slows, Hester is sliced open above his right eye. Miranda works to secure position and then clocks Hester with a few thunderous left hands. Miranda follows with a big elbow strike, then slows his pace as Hester tries to control the wrists.

Round 2

Hester bombs with a huge right hand down the center, but it’s slipped by Miranda, who circles away. Hester dives on the Brazilian’s legs and hits a takedown, only to see Miranda post and stand seconds later. A low kick from “Lex Luthor” chops the leg out from underneath Hester, who jumps back to his feet and continues walking after Miranda. A diving double-leg attempt from Hester is stuffed by Miranda, who kneels down with Hester’s head between his knees to land a few body shots. Hester gets back to his feet and tries to hold Miranda on the fence, but can’t. Miranda slides backward, backing up to the fence, where he catches the shooting Hester with a knee on the jaw. Miranda tries to pound out the American, slamming him with punches on the mat as referee Herb Dean looks on from inches away. Hester survives the first assault, but when Miranda ramps up for another round of ground-and-pound with Hester’s left arm gift-wrapped, Dean steps in to stop the fight.

Iuri Alcantara vs. Leandro Issa

Round 1

Alcantara lands a body kick to start the fight and pushes Issa backward toward the fence with a pair of punches. Issa circles out and backpedals as the larger man continues to creep forward. Alcantara catches his opponent with a hard knee that sends Issa shooting for a takedown on the fence. Alcantara goes over the top and nearly lands in position for a reverse triangle choke before Issa slips out the back door. Instead, Alcantara attacks one of Issa’s arms, then releases and kicks away “Brodinho.” Before Alcantara can scramble up, Issa drives forward and pushes him back to the ground, then begins working from half guard with short ground-and-pound. Midway through the round, Issa passes to side control, where the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt begins threatening Alcantara with submission attempts. Issa switches from an arm-triangle choke setup to a kimura attempt, leaning right to left across the body of “Marajo” to work on the left arm. Alcantara turns toward Issa, frees his arm and moves to stand. Issa is a step behind, allowing Alcantara to try and jump on Issa’s back as they stand. Again, Issa escapes out the back door, and this time he flattens out Alcantara to achieve full mount. Alcantara rides out the final 20 seconds on the bottom, absorbing a few punches from Issa before bucking him out of mount.

Round 2

The southpaw Alcantara takes tentative steps forward and waits about 30 seconds before clipping Issa with a left hook. Issa slips and falls to the mat but scrambles right back up to his feet, where he continues stepping backward. Issa winds up with a telegraphed overhand right, dodged by Alcantara and countered with a close-quarters uppercut. Ninety seconds in, Issa shoots for a takedown, but it’s sprawled on by Alcantara up against the fence. Issa keeps working for it, and Alcantara nearly goes over the top again. Alcantara stands up and presses his back against the fence to hit Issa with a few elbows as the jiu-jitsu ace keeps trying for the takedown. Referee Osiris Maia resets the fighters with 90 seconds to go, and Alcantara drills Issa with a straight left hand on the jaw. Issa drops after taking a hard body kick, then stands up to be met with another hard left hand. Alcantara shoves his man to the ground and scores with a few elbows to the face before Issa is able to tangle up his countryman and slow the offense. Issa is back on his feet with 30 seconds left, wobbling backward as Alcantara walks him down with more clean left hands.

Round 3

A front kick to the body and a left hand send Issa shooting for a takedown just seconds into the round. Alcantara defends and forces Issa to his back, nearly achieving full mount in the process. Issa squirms underneath, trying to sweep by entangling Alcantara’s legs, so “Marajo” bails and gets back on his feet. Issa follows, and Alcantara continues to find a home for his straight left hand as he walks down the shorter man. Alcantara sprawls all over a long double-leg shot, then makes Issa back up to the fence with a pair of body kicks. Issa circles out, takes another hard kick to the gut and fails on another takedown attempt. The next shot from Issa is greeted by a knee from Alcantara, who reverses and spins Issa to the ground at the base of the fence. Alcantara lands in side control and frames up a kimura, but Issa fends it off as he sits up against the cage. Alcantara releases the arm and bashes Issa with ground-and-pound, bloodying his face before standing up and ordering him back to his feet. Issa is in rough shape as the final minute ticks down, staggering backward as Alcantara tags him with more left hands and body shots. Alcantara looks close to finishing in the final 30 seconds when he catches Issa with a combination near the fence, but Issa shoots for Alcantara’s legs and finishes the round working for a takedown on the fence.

Round 1

Alves whiffs on his first low kick but lands the second, then catches Taleb’s return kick for a quick takedown in the center of the cage. The Brazilian puts a forearm across Taleb’s throat in side control, but Taleb gets a knee inside and reclaims half guard. A few seconds later, it’s full guard for Taleb, who is doing well to neutralize any offense from Alves on top. The welterweights scramble back to their feet 90 seconds into the round, and Alves backs up Taleb to the fence with more low kicks and a rushing right hand. They come back to the center, where an overhand right from Alves takes the legs out from underneath Taleb. The Canadian regains his footing quickly and shoots for a takedown, but it’s stuffed by Alves. Now recovered, Taleb backs up Alves and sends a straight right hand down the center. Alves circles out to the middle, where both men swing and miss with big hooks. Taleb initiates a clinch on the fence, puts a hard knee on Alves’ body, then another. Alves escapes in the closing seconds of the round but is clipped by a Taleb elbow as he does.

Round 2

Alves connects with a hard leg kick and a right hand behind it, but Taleb catches the next kick and tries to turn it into a takedown. Alves leaps out of the takedown attempt, catches a kick from Taleb and rolls the Canadian to the ground near the center of the cage. It’s half guard for Alves, who grinds with short elbows and forearms while Taleb works to reclaim full guard. Alves repositions himself, postures up in half guard and socks Taleb with a hard left hand midway through the round. Taleb gets butterfly guard and creates some space, then rolls to his knees and explodes to his feet. Alves tries to catch him in a guillotine on the way up, can’t, and instead winds up holding Taleb against the fence with 90 seconds on the clock. Taleb reverses the clinch and drops levels to try a double-leg, but this time, Alves is waiting with the guillotine. Alves jumps guard, cranks the neck from closed guard and forces Taleb to tap out.

Rafael Cavalcante vs. Patrick Cummins

Round 1

Cavalcante puts a kick on the inside of Cummins’ lead leg, then touches him with a jab on the chin. The Brazilian whips around with a wheel kick, but Cummins ducks underneath and plows him to the floor. Cavalcante scrambles back up immediately and grabs the fence to prevent another takedown, drawing a warning from referee Mario Yamasaki. From the rear waistlock position, Cummins slams Cavalcante to the ground, but again “Feijao” stands right back up. Cummins continues to knee at Cavalcante’s legs from the rear, tries another slam, then another, but Cavalcante keeps his balance. Cavalcante clips Cummins with an over-the-shoulder elbow; seconds later, Cummins drags the Brazilian to the ground. Cavalcante stands and gets ragdolled back to the mat. Again, Cavalcante stands up, and now Cummins backs away midway through the round. Cavalcante lands a right hand, loads up on it again, but Cummins ducks under the second and holds him against the cage again. Another slam takedown from Cummins, another stand up from Cavalcante. “Feijao” swings and misses with a big overhand right, countered by a right from Cummins, who’s sporting lumps underneath both eyes as the round enters its final minute. Cummins digs an underhook and puts Cavalcante back on the fence, much to the displeasure of the partisan crowd.

Round 2

Cavalcante catches Cummins shooting and cracks him with an uppercut, but the American keeps charging and shoves Feijao against the fence again. This punch has done more damage to Cummins’ face, blood now spraying from his nose along with his two swollen eyes. Cavalcante escapes the clinch to crack Cummins with a right hook, so Cummins shoots and scores another easy takedown. This time, he lands in Cavalcante’s closed guard and postures up to throw body punches. Two minutes into the round, Cummins maintains top position but his offense has dropped off. A minute later, Cummins begins scoring with hard punches through Cavalcante’s guard. When he stands up, Cavalcante clips him with an upkick, so Cummins comes right back down to his opponent’s guard. Referee Yamasaki stands up the fighters with 90 seconds left, and he wants the doctor to have a look at Cummins’ busted-up face. The doctor cleans Cummins to continue, and the fighters are restarted on the ground. Cavalcante creates some space with elevator guard, lands a right hand and hits Cummins with another upkick. Cavalcante scrambles to his feet and loses his mouthguard in the ensuing exchange. When the fight resumes with 20 seconds left, Cummins hits one more takedown to close out the round and lands two or three right hands to the back of the kneeling Cavalcante’s head.

Round 3

Cummins goes straight after the takedown and puts Cavalcante on the canvas at the base of the fence. Cummins uses a can opener to break Cavalcante’s closed guard, then gets to work elbowing the Brazilian in the face with heavy shots. Half a dozen elbows later, referee Yamasaki recognizes that Cavalcante is unconscious and steps in to halt the fight.

Demian Maia vs. Neil Magny

Round 1

Maia takes the center of the cage and flicks out twitchy jabs before shooting low, being stuffed and pulling guard. Maia creates space and gets back to his feet, then shoots against the fence and takes Magny straight back to the ground. Full mount for Maia, who threatens with a mounted triangle choke before instead opting for ground-and-pound. Maia starts getting some steam behind his punches as he postures up, so Magny rolls over to give up his back. Before Maia can secure the position, Magny rolls over again to put his back on the mat. Magny bucks the Brazilian out of mount, but Maia is deep in Magny’s half guard again within seconds. Magny gives up his back again with two minutes left in the opening round, then rolls over again before Maia takes it. Maia tries to pound but misses with his punches and buries his face in Magny’s chest. With 70 seconds left, Maia starts posturing up again, and the punches and elbows look much harder now. Magny tries to sweep with his arm around Maia’s waist and nearly gets caught in an arm-triangle. The jiu-jitsu whiz threatens to attack with an armbar or a triangle in the closing seconds, but Magny latches his hands and survives to see round two.

Round 2

Maia has Magny back on the canvas within 10 seconds; by 30 seconds, he’s passed to side control on Magny’s right. Magny kicks up his legs and catches Maia’s head but can’t cinch the triangle. After slipping loose, Maia steps over to full mount, but Magny fends off an arm-triangle choke and pushes him back to half guard. With 3:20 on the clock, it’s full mount again for Maia, then he finally takes the back of Magny. Securing the position with a body triangle, Maia softens up Magny with punches before snaking his left arm around the American’s chin. Maia bears down on the choke-slash-neck crank and elicits a tap from Magny.

Jessica Aguilar vs. Claudia Gadelha

Round 1

Gadelha catches the incoming Aguilar in a Thai clinch and cracks her with a knee to the face before releasing. The Brazilian sends a trio of straight punches down the center, answered by Aguilar with a low kick. Less than a minute into the fight, Aguilar is wearing some redness on the face from Gadelha’s early strikes. Gadelha connects with a hard right hook, then doubles up as Aguilar slides away. Gadelha’s right hook is finding its mark steadily now as she continues to walk down Aguilar midway through the round. A lead uppercut cuts through Aguilar’s guard, then a stiff jab pushes her backward. Another combination and a clinch knee scores for Gadelha, who is having her way with the former WSOF champ so far. Aguilar continues to connect with leg kicks as a left hand from Gadelha cuts open the American’s face. Gadelha blasts her to the ground with a powerful takedown and then moves to take back-mount as Aguilar kneels. Aguilar wraps up Gadelha’s left hand and throws punches over her shoulder until the horn sounds.

Round 2

Gadelha scores again with the left hook early in round two, then follows up with an uppercut and a cross. A cracking right hook makes Aguilar wince, and Gadelha chases down her wounded foe to press her against the cage. Aguilar is cut on the nose as she’s wrapped up in a body lock and slammed to the ground. Gadelha tries to slip around to the back but can’t get there before Aguilar powers back to her feet. Aguilar turns Gadelha against the fence and lands a couple knees to the body. Midway through the round, Aguilar circles the edge of the cage, trying to keep Gadelha on the end of long punches. Gadelha eats a few shots to close the gap and score with more uppercuts and hooks. Aguilar is getting off first on her punches late in the round, but they’re not landing cleanly and, when they do, Gadelha just takes them. More effective are the leg kicks from “JAG,” which Gadelha begins checking late in the round. Gadelha continues to snap off crisp jabs and uppercuts before planting Aguilar on the canvas with a double-leg in the closing seconds.

Round 3

Gadelha tags Aguilar with a few left hands and a clinch knee, answered by the American Top Team fighter with a pair of hard outside leg kicks. A pair of left hook-right straight combos score for Gadelha, who eats a right hook from Aguilar in return. Aguilar shoots a high double-leg in the center of the cage, then drives Gadelha against the fence as the Brazilian hops backward. Aguilar exits the clinch with a level elbow, but Gadelha tags her back with a right hand. Aguilar’s face is a bloody mess as she shoots a limp double-leg and is shoved away. Aguilar clips Gadelha with an uppercut; “Claudinha” strikes back with a few hard left hooks. Down to the final 90 seconds now, and Aguilar eats a pair of punches to land another kick to Gadelha’s lead leg. Gadelha blasts Aguilar to the ground with a double-leg with 30 seconds on the clock, stands up in guard and tries to drop punches, but Aguilar controls the wrists.

Antonio Silva vs. Soa Palelei

Round 1

Silva takes the center of the cage and stalks forward on Palelei, who changes levels for a single-leg and eats a knee along the way. Palelei grabs hold of Silva’s leg and pushes him against the fence, releasing briefly and then dropping back down to try a double-leg shot. Palelei releases and snaps off a few jabs before trying another takedown and being pushed away by “Bigfoot.” When Palelei threatens to change levels again, Silva threatens with the knee and instead shoves the Australian to the fence. Halfway through the round, Silva tries to rip Palelei off the cage and trip him to the ground, but “The Hulk” keeps his footing. Palelei reaps the leg of Silva and sends him crashing to the canvas, and now it’s Palelei on top in Silva’s half guard with 90 seconds left in the round. Silva puts his left hand between Palelei’s legs and tries to sweep from deep half guard. Palelei keeps him grounded and stands up in Silva’s guard to drop punches. Hammer fists in the final 10 seconds appear to daze Silva, but he survives to hear the horn.

Round 2

Silva lands a lead uppercut near the fence, pushes down on Palelei’s head and adds a few more uppercuts behind it. A knee connects for “Bigfoot,” followed by a pair of right hooks and another uppercut that has Palelei slumping to his knees. A few more punches on the ground and no response from the turtling Palelei send referee John McCarthy into action.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Stefan Struve

Round 1

Nogueira catches Struve with an early left hook and shoves the “Skyscraper” against the fence with over-unders. Struve is unable to break free but maintains his footing and avoids the takedown as “Minotauro” spins him around, looking to hit a trip. Nogueira switches to a single but still can’t bring down Struve, who reverses the clinch. Nogueira turns him right back around, but Struve breaks free and decks the veteran with a long right hand. The punch sends Nogueira right back to the clinch, again with over-unders, but this time Struve is able to separate quickly. Another hard right hand scores for Struve in the center of the cage, and again Nogueira clinches up. Struve reverses, trips “Big Nog” to the ground and then tells referee Herb Dean to stand up the Brazilian. Nogueira eats a knee and looks a bit wobbly as he charges forward, swinging punches. A pair of reaching hooks touch Struve’s face but don’t seem to have any effect. Struve circles back to the center, where he hits Nogueira with a knee, a front kick, a right hand. Nogueira snaps off a jab in the younger man’s face and pushes him back to the fence. Exiting the clinch in the closing seconds, Nogueira lands a left hand, answered by Struve with an inside leg kick and one more right hand.

Round 2

Struve tries to keep Nogueira at bay with kicks, but the Brazilian rushes in with punches and catches Struve with a few before initiating another clinch on the cage. Nogueira slips around to take Struve’s back and then trips him to the ground, nearly securing a rear-naked choke before Struve flips over. Struve bucks Nogueira out of mount and kicks him away, enabling the Dutchman to get back to his feet. Nogueira again blitzes with up-reaching punches, then spins Struve off the fence with a single-leg but can’t complete the takedown. Struve tries a standing elbow, ducked under by Nogueira, who closes the gap for yet another clinch. Nogueira tries to use the same back-take-to-trip, but Struve is wise to it this time and dips away. More straight punches and leg kicks score for Struve, answered by Nogueira with a loud left hand to the body. Nogueira snaps off a jab and then uses good head movement to dodge three or four murderous punches. Struve cracks Nogueira with a knee to the jaw before being pushed against the cage, where the big men finish the round in the clinch.

Struve tags Nogueira with a pair of punches and then extends a hand, as if a finger may have gone into the Brazilian’s eye. Nogueira blocks a head kick, shoots and completes a takedown, but it’s short-lived and Struve is soon back to lobbing out long punches. Struve switches to leg kicks for a moment, then steps in to drive a knee into Nogueira’s gut. Minotauro eats a couple more punches to close the gap and hug Struve against the fence. Struve escapes the clinch with ease this time and circles back to the center, where he continues to pick at Nogueira’s lead leg. Nogueira absorbs a foot to the side of the head and walks inside to clinch again. Struve escapes without injury and snaps back Nogueira’s head with a series of jabs. A left hook from the backfoot scores for Struve, then more heavy leg kicks, but Nogueira just keeps coming forward. With 30 seconds left, it looks like a lost cause for Nogueira, who clinches one final time but can barely hold Struve on the cage.

Dileno Lopes vs. Reginaldo Vieira

Round 1

Vieira grabs the collar of southpaw Lopes, who throws a dozen or more speedy uppercuts to the body before Vieira releases. Both bantamweights connects with hard right hands, then Vieira chases Lopes toward the fence. Vieira jumps guard with a guillotine, but Lopes escapes danger by passing to side control. As they scramble up, Lopes pulls guard with a guillotine of his own. This one looks deeper, but Vieira slips his head free and escapes to his feet. Lopes snatches up another guillotine and jumps guard again; this one isn’t as close, and Vieira waits a few seconds before sliding out. Back on the feet, Lopes backs up against the fence and eats some whipping right hands, only to answer with a couple of big lefts which appear to sting Vieira. An overhand right from Vieira scores, then another, and Lopes’ left eye is swollen and bloody as he retreats to the stool.

Round 2

Vieira is scoring with straight punches in the opening minute of round two, as well as sliding backward to avoid Lopes’ more telegraphed overhands. Lopes lands a hard kick to the body but comes up short with a big left hand behind it. Lopes goes underneath a straight punch and digs a left hook to Vieira’s body. Vieira beats Lopes to the punch with a straight shot down the center, picking off a looping right hand. Lopes appears to get hurt by a kick to the liver, but as he backs up with his right arm guarding his body, he clubs the incoming Lopes with a left hand. Down to the final minute of the round, it’s Lopes pressing the action, then changing levels to floor Vieira with a single-leg in the center of the cage. Vieira closes guard and pulls down Lopes’ head to avoid any serious damage as the final 30 seconds tick down. Referee Osiris Maia stands up the 135ers, but it’s too late in the round for anything significant on the feet.

Round 3

Lopes pushes the action again at the start of the final round, walking forward on Vieira with punches which often come up short. When Vieira gets into range, Lopes tries to clinch but can’t keep hold. Two minutes into the round, with little happening, the Rio fans begin to boo their countrymen. Lopes floors Vieira with a takedown but gets wrapped up in Vieira’s guard and can’t do much on top. As they stand, Lopes jumps guard with a guillotine, and again the choke looks tight. Vieira spends more than a minute fighting his way out of the guillotine, but a sudden stream of blood pouring out of his face aids in his escape. Vieira winds up on top in the final minute, trying to reclaim some points with ground-and-pound, swinging through Lopes’ guard with punches until the horn.

Fernando Bruno vs. Glaico Franca

Round 1

Franca lands a leg kick and then covers up as Bruno tries to bomb him with a flurry of punches. Bruno swings his way inside again and shoots on the legs of Franca, who sprawls and tries to spin around to take the black belt’s back. Bruno won’t have it and slips out to drive forward again, finally flooring Franca with a single near the fence. Franca springs right back to his feet, still held against the cage by Bruno’s underhooks. Franca sprawls again when Bruno shoots low, then comes back to score a takedown of his own. Bruno takes a seat at the base of the fence with two minutes left, and Franca tries to rip him off the cage to pass to side control. Bruno powers back to his feet, only to be dragged back to the mat as soon as he’s vertical. Franca tries to jump on the back of the Nova Uniao fighter as the round enters its final minute. Bruno fends him off but gets a warning from referee Herb Dean for grabbing the fence. Franca stalls out trying to take the back and rides out the last seconds of the round with his arms around Bruno’s upper body.

Round 2

Franca hits Bruno with a few solid leg kicks before Bruno closes the distance and hugs him against the fence. Bruno spends the better part of a minute holding Franca on the cage, trying to trip him up. Franca keeps his footing until he’s able to reverse, whereupon he instantly trips Bruno to the mat. Bruno stands up, Franca still holding his back, but Franca loses the position when he tries to pull Bruno backwards with him. Bruno goes heavy and takes top position as Franca drops to the ground. Bruno is controlling position, keeping Franca on the ground, but doing little from on top. With 1:40 on the clock, Bruno gets kicked away and allows Franca to stand. Bruno tosses Franca to the ground, but the ensuing scramble sees Franca jump on his back with one hook in, hunting for a rear-naked choke. Securing the position with a body triangle, Franca comes close with the RNC but can’t manage to get underneath Bruno’s chin before time runs out.

Round 3

Bruno comes out swinging leather, looking for the homerun shot, but when he can’t find Franca’s chin with his opening salvos, Bruno goes right back to a takedown attempt. He pushes Franca to the fence, drags him to the ground and jumps on his back, but Franca scrambles out of a rear-naked choke attempt and jumps back to his feet. Bruno follows him up and connects with a couple punches before dropping levels and hitting a quick takedown. Franca stands right up, Bruno still wrapped around his waist, then reverses before taking a knee to the groin. After a brief break, Franca shuts down a takedown attempt and just misses with a right high kick. Both men are exhausted with two minutes left in the fight, but Franca wins the battle of wills and floors Bruno with a slow-motion takedown near the fence. Franca stands up and jumps on the back of the kneeling Bruno, then gets to work on a rear-naked choke with one minute remaining. Bruno buries his chin and prevents the RNC, but punches from Franca force the Nova Uniao fighter to posture up. As soon as Bruno leaves his neck exposed, Franca snatches the RNC and forces a quick tap.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua

Round 1

Rua stakes out the center of the cage and follows as Nogueira circles left around the outside. “Shogun” connects with a hard kick to the body of the southpaw and then backs out of the pocket without following up. Nogueira catches Rua stepping inside and backs him out with an uppercut. Rua steps back, resets and cracks “Little Nog” with a right hand and a chopping leg kick. Nogueira tries to clinch, can’t hold Rua on the fence and ducks low in an exchange to swipe Rua’s face with a wide right hook. Shogun lands a right hook, has a right high kick blocked and then puts a hard kick on Nogueira’s ribs. Suddenly, a left hook on the temple puts Rua on rubber legs, and Nogueira smells blood. “Minotouro” rushes Rua against the fence with heavy punches, bombing Shogun with both hands. Rua survives the assault and tries to clinch up, but he has to bail out when Nogueira threatens with a standing guillotine. Nogueira releases the neck and attacks Rua against the fence with more hard punches in the wild closing seconds.

Round 2

Rua changes tacts and shoots for a quick single-leg, spinning Nogueira to the ground in the center of the cage. Nogueira keeps butterfly guard and throws punches from underneath until Rua passes to half guard and “Nog” has to play defense. Rua nearly passes to side control, but Nogueira gets an arm between Shogun’s legs and uses deep half guard to scramble back up. On the feet, now midway through the round, Rua slams Nogueira’s flank with a hard right kick to the ribs. Shogun closes the distance and pushes Nogueira against the cage with an underhook, holding him there for 20 seconds or so before the 205ers are separated by referee Mario Yamasaki. Rua further reddens the body of Nogueira with another big kick to the ribs, then another down the stretch.

Round 3

Rua opens the final round with another kick to Nogueira’s left ribs, then slides backward to avoid punches. After taking another Shogun kick on the body, Nogueira comes alive with a punching combination. Rua seems to feel the punches, as he changes levels and pushes Nogueira against the fence to slow the pace. Nogueira breaks free, takes yet another loud kick on the ribs and snaps back Rua’s head with a lead uppercut. Shogun lands a leg kick, eats a left hook and comes back over the top with a right-handed counter. Nogueira defends a single-leg takedown by hopping backward to the fence; this time, he won’t be controlled in the clinch and pushes Rua away. Shogun slips a punch from Nogueira and counters over the top with a right, then creeps into the pocket to land a straight right and a body kick. Under two minutes remain, and Nogueira continues to work his punching combinations while Rua keeps adding kicks to the body and legs. Rua pushes Nogueira to the fence again and gets caught in a guillotine, then has to fight to extract his head when Nogueira jumps guard with the choke cinched up. Nogueira is squeezing for dear life but cannot find the finish, and Rua survives to hear the final horn.

UFC Women's Bantamweight Title Fight: Ronda Rousey vs. Bethe Correia

Round 1

John McCarthy is the referee for tonight’s title fight, with judges Guilherme Bravo, Hallison Pontes and Tony Weeks scoring at cageside. Rousey whiffs on an early pair of punches, misses an overhand right and then grabs the back of Correia’s head to land an uppercut. She trips Correia to the ground, but the Brazilian rolls through and jumps back to her feet. Rousey tags her with a left hook on the jaw against the fence, then chases Correia around the edge of the fence and drills her with a right hand behind the ear. A left hand to the jaw follows behind it, but it’s already over: Correia falls face-first to the canvas, and referee McCarthy pulls Rousey away from her dazed challenger. She’s done it again -- Ronda Rousey defends her UFC women’s bantamweight in under a minute.
