Only nine fights made it to the latest
Ultimate Fighting Championship card on Saturday afternoon at
the UFC Apex, and it was short and sweet. Women swept the night
with stellar performances, and more appropriately, all the bonus
money for the first time in UFC history.
UFC Fight Night 194 featured a solid striking array from the
victorious headliner, a flyweight with a dubious record in no
danger of losing his job and an unusual switch from a massive
favorite to a sizeable underdog.
Ladies’ Night at the Apex: The “Fight of the Night” award went to headliners Marina Rodriguez and Mackenzie Dern, while “Performance of the Night” honors were bestowed to Mariya Agapova and Lupita Godinez for their finishes on Saturday. This is the first event in company history where women took home all of the bonuses.
Punches in Bunches and More Bunches: Across five hard-fought rounds, Rodriguez nearly tripled her opponent’s volume by landing 144 significant strikes. Rodriguez finds herself one strike under the 10th highest one-fight tally in UFC women’s strawweight history, held by Joanna Jedrzejczyk against Rose Namajunas in 2018.
How Rude: Unable to knock the heavier Jared Gooden out, Randy Brown settled for a unanimous decision win after suffering a foot injury early in the bout. The win on the scorecards is only the third in the career of “Rude Boy,” and his first since 2017.
Not on the Cut List: Former flyweight title challenger Tim Elliott fell short to Matheus Nicolau by unanimous scores on the main card. Elliott’s loss at 125 pounds was his 10th, further extending his own record for the most defeats in divisional history. No other active UFC flyweight has lost more than three times.
Kazakhstan Back on the Map: Win or lose, in all three of her UFC bouts, Agapova or her victorious opponent have earned POTN bonuses for their performances. Agapova took home $50,000 by dropping Sabina Mazo and putting her away with a rear-naked choke early into the third round.
Wild and Crazy Kid: Agapova now celebrates an 80% finish rate after tapping Mazo. Each of her last five victories dating back to 2018 has come inside the distance.
Vegas Betrayed Her: In her last fight against Shana Dobson, Agapova closed as a remarkable -1375 favorite and lost in the biggest betting upset in UFC history. Against Mazo, Agapova clocked in as a +175 underdog, joining a small club of UFC fighters over the years to close as 10-to-1 favorites or higher and then drop to an underdog in their next outing. This now 10-fight group includes names over the years like Tito Ortiz, Dustin Poirier and Renan Barao.
Moldovan Might: Finishing the job in Round 2, Alexander Romanov stopped Jared Vanderaa with strikes to advance his flawless record to 15-0. The heavyweight from Moldova has earned 14 of those 15 by finish, while never going the distance as a professional.
Leeching Off a Win: A bloody win from the judges for Damon Jackson marked only the second time in his lengthy career that he had gotten his hand raised on the scorecards. This 15-minute affair snapped an 11-fight streak of stoppages, win or lose, for “The Leech.”
Consistently Inconsistent: Starting with his unsuccessful promotional debut in 2014 to Dennis Siver, Charles Rosa has alternated wins and losses for his entire 11-fight UFC tenure. This stretch of 11 straight fights without consecutive victories, defeats or a draw or no contest interspersed is tied for the longest of its kind in UFC history with Marcos Rogerio de Lima.
For Hispanic Heritage Month: By snagging an armbar on short-notice replacement Silvana Gomez Juarez, Mexico’s Godinez lifted her low career finish rate from 20% to 33% in victory.
A Real Mean Machine: Starting the night off wildly, Steve Garcia rebounded from multiple knockdowns to put Charlie Ontiveros away with strikes in the second frame. A clean 75% of the wins for “Mean Machine” have come by knockout, including each of his last four.
Bad for Someone: Ontiveros, a 19-fight veteran with eight defeats on his ledger, suffered another knockout loss and his first consecutive pair of losses due to Garcia. All eight of the setbacks for “The American Bad Boy” have ended with him getting knocked out.
Never Say Never Again: Coming into UFC Fight Night 194, Dern had never competed beyond the third round (12 fights), Godinez had never won by submission (six fights) and Juarez had never been submitted (12 fights).
Didn’t Lose Her Leg: For the eighth time in her nine-fight UFC career, Rodriguez selected the instrumental version of “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” by Dropkick Murphys. She remains unbeaten when walking out to that tune, as Carla Esparza selected it against her when they met in 2020.
She Got Enough: Mazo’s choice of “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson rocked the UFC Apex but ultimately the Colombian lost her fight to Agapova. With her defeat added to the books for the beloved pop star, UFC fighters who walked out to Jackson songs have still won exactly two-thirds of their bouts.
