By The Numbers: UFC on ESPN 49

It’s a new era in the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight division.

Mayra Bueno Silva foiled Holly Holm’s bid for another shot at championship gold, as she submitted “The Preacher’s Daughter” with a ninja choke 38 seconds into Round 2 of their headlining bout at UFC on ESPN 49 on Saturday night. It was Holm’s first submission defeat since 2016, and it could very well propel the Brazilian to the top of the contender’s queue in a weight class that is currently wide open in the wake of Amanda Nunes’ recent retirement.

4: Consecutive wins for Silva, tying her with Raquel Pennington for the longest active winning streak in the UFC women’s bantamweight division.

3: Consecutive submission victories in UFC competition for Silva. In addition to Holm, “Sheetara” has recent tapouts of Lina Lansberg (kneebar) and Stephanie Egger (armbar).

49: Total strikes landed by Holm in Round 1. Silva, meanwhile, landed 30 total strikes in the frame. Holm also enjoyed 2:42 total control time, while Silva didn’t log a single second in that area.

5: Consecutive victories for Jack Della Maddalena, tying him for the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s welterweight division. The Aussie had his toughest test to date in the Octagon, as he earned a split verdict over short-notice foe Bassil Hafez in the evening’s co-main event.

83: Significant strikes landed by Maddalena. By comparison, Hafez landed 32. Maddalena outlanded his opponent 13 to 7 in Round 1, 27 to 16 in Round 2 and 43 to 7 in Round 3. Maddalena also had a 149-to-48 edge in total strikes landed.

27: Significant body strikes landed by Maddalena. Hafez, meanwhile, landed two.

3: Takedowns landed in 20 attempts for Hafez, who forced Maddalena to consistently defend his shots throughout the three-round affair. Hafez also logged 6:48 of control time compared to 1:19 for his opponent.

4: Consecutive victories for Jun Yong Park, tying him with Brendan Allen, Caio Borralho, Anthony Hernandez and Andre Petroski for the second-longest active winning streak in the middleweight division behind top contender Dricus Du Plessis (six).

38: Significant strikes landed by Francisco Prado in a first-round stoppage of Ottman Azaitar at lightweight. Prado connected at a 66 percent clip while also scoring the fight’s only knockdown before the finish arrived at the 4:05 mark of Round 1. Azaitar, meanwhile, landed 14 significant strikes in defeat.

25: Significant strikes by which Norma Dumont outlanded Chelsea Chandler in their featured featherweight matchup. The Brazilian also went 3-for-3 on takedowns and logged 8:58 of control time in a clear-cut unanimous decision win.

5: Featherweight triumphs for Dumont, the most in the history of the women’s division. The future of the weight class is currently unclear following the retirement of Amanda Nunes, who held the 145-pound belt.

48: Signficant body strikes landed by Melquizael Costa in a clear-cut decision triumph against Austin Lingo at featherweight. That was more than the total amount of significant strikes landed by Lingo (39) in the three-round affair. Overall, Costa outlanded his foe by a 100-to-39 count in significant strikes.

.490: Signifcant striking accuracy for Evan Elder, who landed 96 of 195 attempts in a three-round verdict over Genaro Valdez at lightweight. Valdez was far less accurate, landing 64 of 236 attempts — a 27 percent clip. Elder also distributed his offense well, with 61 strikes to the head, 15 to the body and 20 to the legs. Valdez landed 51 head strikes, four to the body and nine to the legs.

81: Significant strikes landed by Tyson Nam in a split-decision defeat to newcomer Azat Maksum at flyweight. By comparison, Maksum landed 46.

35: Significant leg strikes for Nam. Maksum landed just one.

17: Consecutive victories by Maksum to beginning his professional career. Saturday’s win over Nam was the Kazakhstan native’s Octagon debut.

10: Takedowns landed in 15 attempts for Ailin Perez in a lopsided unanimous decision triumph over Ashlee Evans-Smith. That’s a new UFC record for the UFC women’s bantamweight division, surpassing the eight landed by Amanda Nunes against Germaine de Randamie at UFC 245.

127: Total strikes landed by Perez. By comparison, Evans-Smith landed just 13. Perez also logged 11:36 of control time compared to eight seconds for her opponent.
