By The Numbers: UFC 284 Pre-Fight Edition


Islam Makhachev will defend his undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight crown against current featherweight titleholder Alexander Volkanovski in the UFC 284 headliner on Saturday at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. Meanwhile, “The Ultimate Fighter Latin America” Season 1 winner Yair Rodriguez locks horns with Team Alpha Male’s Josh Emmett for the interim featherweight championship in the five-round co-main event.

As UFC 284 “Makhachev vs. Volkanovski” approaches, a look at some of the numbers the fighters on the card bring to the table:

11: Makhachev victories by submission, accounting for 48% of his career total (23). His methods of choice: four triangle chokes, two armbars, two rear-naked chokes, two arm-triangle chokes and one kimura. Makhachev holds four other victories by knockout or technical knockout (17%) and eight more by decision (35%).

12: Volkanovski wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 48% of his career total (25). His list of UFC victims: Chan Sung Jung, Chad Mendes, Jeremy Kennedy and Yusuke Kasuya. Volkanovski owns three other wins by submission (12%) and 10 more by decision (40%).

400,000: Dollars in post-fight bonuses banked by Rodriguez across his 12 appearances in the UFC. He has been awarded “Fight of the Night” on five different occasions and “Performance of the Night” three times.

37: Years of age for Emmett. The oldest fighter on the card, he was born on March 4, 1985 in Phoenix.

2,450: Days since Jack Della Maddalena last suffered a defeat. The Australian prospect has pieced together a 13-fight winning streak after surrendering to a rear-naked choke from Darcy Vendy at an Eternal MMA show on May 28, 2016. Della Maddalena meets Randy Brown in a three-round welterweight feature.

115: Significant strikes landed by Brown in his unanimous decision over Jared Gooden at UFC Fight Night 194 in October 2021. It established a personal high-water mark for the former Ring of Combat champion that stands to this day.

28: Seconds needed for Justin Tafa to punch out Jeremy Joiner under the Xtreme Fighting Championship banner on July 28, 2018. More than four years later, it remains his fastest finish to date. Tafa squares off with Parker Porter in a three-round heavyweight showcase.

22: Rounds completed by Porter as a professional mixed martial artist. He has gone the distance on four different occasions and carries a perfect 4-0 record in those bouts.

8: Consecutive calendar years in which Alonzo Menifield has fought at least once. He went 1-0 in 2015, 1-0 in 2016, 3-0 in 2017, 2-0 in 2018, 2-0 in 2019, 0-2 in 2020, 2-1 in 2021 and 2-0 in 2022. Menifield confronts Jimmy Crute in a three-round light heavyweight attraction.

5: Countries in which Crute has suited up as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 9-0 in his native Australia, 1-2 in the United States, 1-0 in New Zealand, 1-0 in the United Arab Emirates and 0-1 in Canada.

20: Years of age for the unbeaten Francisco Prado. The youngest fighter on the card, he was born in San Lorenzo, Argentina, on June 16, 2002. Prado faces Jamie Mullarkey in a three-round lightweight prelim.

.805: Cumulative winning percentage between the 26 fighters booked to compete at the event. They sport a combined record of 323-77-3. Volkanovski has the most wins (25) of anyone on the card, while Porter has been saddled with the most losses (seven).
