Adrien Broner Edges Adrian Granados in Showtime Main Event
Adrien Broner had to dig deep in order to pull off a majority
decision victory over Adrian Granados in the main event of a solid
tripleheader on Showtime Saturday night. “The Problem” seized
control of the fight early with his blinding speed and accurate
punching, but it wasn’t too long into the fight when Granados
stormed back.
Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) slowed down in the middle stages of the their 10-round welterweight affair, allowing Granados (18-5-2, 11 KOs) to rally and tag him with clean, sharp punches to the head. The two opted to stand and trade in exciting spurts of action down the stretch and while neither man was taken off his feet, the action was thrilling when they stood toe-to-toe.
In the end, two of the three ringside judges favored Broner’s harder, cleaner punches to Granados’ higher volume of offense, handing him a critical majority nod in front of his hometown fans at Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. The scores benefitted Broner, a former four-division world champion, 97-93 and 96-94, with the odd judge seeing it 95-95.
In the co-feature, Lamont Peterson out-boxed and out-foxed David Avanesyan (22-2-1, 11 KOs) over 12 rounds to snatch the WBA welterweight title from him. Peterson (35-3-1, 18 KOs) opted for a more fan-pleasing style throughout the contest as he stood on the inside with Avanesyan for much of the contest, digging punches to the head and body. The battle was close but overall, Peterson’s better punch output and more impactful punches were the key and he won a unanimous decision via tallies of 115-113 and 116-112 (twice).
Light heavyweight contender Marcus Browne improved to 19-0 with his 14th knockout when he took out Thomas Williams Jr. in the sixth. Browne dropped Williams (20-3, 14 KOs) in the second and fourth rounds and then put him down for good in the sixth, scoring the knockout 42 seconds into the frame. Browne had a point taken from him for blatantly hitting Williams in the back of the head when he was down in the second.
