Weekend Rundown: Loiseau, Heavyweight Prospect Konrad Cruise
Brian Knapp Mar 1, 2010
Former UFC middleweight title contender David
Loiseau stopped Chester
Post on first-round strikes in the Mixed Fighting League 2
“Battleground” headliner on Saturday at the Centre Claude-Robillard
in Montreal. Post, a late replacement for Isidro
Gonzalez, met his demise 4:40 into the match.
Loiseau sent his entire purse to ongoing earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. In addition, the promotion reportedly donated $2 from every ticket sold to the American Red Cross.
The victory was Loiseau’s fourth in five fights, but nearly a year
had passed since he lost a unanimous decision to Ed Herman at
UFC 97. The 30-year-old Montreal-based middleweight has now
delivered 12 of his 19 career victories by knockout or technical
knockout.
Other winners at MFL 2 included professional hockey player turned mixed martial artist Steve Bosse -- who earned a unanimous verdict over journeyman Marvin Eastman -- and undefeated UFC veteran Tom Murphy -- who finished the previously unbeaten Bruno Hosier with punches 4:43 into the opening round.
Unbeaten heavyweight prospect Cole Konrad needed less than half a round to dispatch Shine Fights veteran Joel Wyatt at Matrix Fights 1 on Saturday at The Arena in Philadelphia. The end came 2:23 into round one, as Konrad buried his opponent with some heavy artillery.
A two-time national wrestling champion at the University of Minnesota, the 6-foot-5, 265-pound Konrad was a gold medalist at the 2005 Pan American Championships and won bronze at the 2006 World University Championships. The 25-year-old Appleton, Wis., native now trains alongside reigning UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy.
Meanwhile, Bellator Fighting Championships and EliteXC veteran Matt Makowski earned a unanimous nod over LeVon Maynard in the Matrix Fights 1 main event. Makowski, who holds a 2008 disqualification victory against Nick Serra, has rattled off three wins in four fights.
Christison Submits Wessel at CFC 4
Dan Christison submitted Mike Wessel with a third-round kimura in a battle between UFC veterans under the Canadian Fighting Championship 4 marquee on Friday at the Winnipeg Convention Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Wessel tapped out to the arm lock 3:56 into round three.
Christison, a 37-year-old Californian spawned by Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” has won three consecutive fights and 10 of his last 11, losing only to former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Marcio Cruz in that span. The 6-foot-8 Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts product has secured all 18 of his victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission.
Wessel has dropped two straight. The 32-year-old former strength and conditioning coach for the University of Arkansas football team appeared on Season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” submitting to Marcus Jones in the preliminary round.
In the CFC 4 co-feature, unbeaten lightweight prospect John Makdessi stopped Lindsey Hawkes on strikes with one second remaining in the second round. Makdessi, a 23-year-old Firas Zahabi protégé, has won all six of his MMA fights by TKO.
Larson Submits Macias
The once-beaten Ryan Larson submitted Pride Fighting Championships and UFC veteran Anthony Macias with a first-round rear-naked choke in the featured matchup at King of Kombat 8 “The Uprising” on Saturday at the Austin Music Hall in Austin, Texas.
Larson has rattled off back-to-back wins since his submission loss to Mike Jackson in July 2008. The 40-year-old Macias, a veteran of UFC 4 and UFC 6, has dropped consecutive bouts following his November win over Shonie Carter.
Other winners at KOK 8 included EliteXC and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Daniel Pineda, Chas Skelly, Diego Brandao and Randy Vera. Pineda, a 24-year-old Houston-based featherweight, has rebounded from a four-fight losing streak with two straight victories.
Hecht, France, Riggs Victorious in EFC
H.I.T. Squad welterweight prospect Jake Hecht outwrestled Charlie Rader en route to a unanimous decision in the Empire Fighting Championships “A Night of Reckoning 2” headliner on Saturday at Harrah’s Casino in Tunica, Miss. All three judges scored it 30-27 for the 25-year-old.
Hecht, who formerly trained with the American Top Team camp in Missouri, has delivered six consecutive victories since losing a split decision to Manuel Garcia in his professional debut four years ago.
Other victors at the EFC event included unbeaten Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Francisco France (punch-induced submission over Tony Roberts), the once-beaten Joshua Thorpe (knockout against Ido Pariente) and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 veteran Jeremiah Riggs (triangle choke submission over Jesse Beale).
Loiseau sent his entire purse to ongoing earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. In addition, the promotion reportedly donated $2 from every ticket sold to the American Red Cross.
