Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker were an easy selection for that honor, as both lightweights received $50,000 for their instant classic in Saturday’s headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Both Poirier and Hooker traded — and landed — liberally, but it was “The Diamond” who got stronger down the stretch to ultimately earn a unanimous decision triumph.
Elsewhere, Julian Erosa garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his come-from-behind submission victory over the heavily-favored Sean Woodson in a featured 150-pound catchweight affair. After getting dropped early in Round 3, Erosa rallied to tap his foe with a brabo choke at the 2:44 mark of Round 3.
Finally, newcomer Kay Hansen earned the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for a submission of former Invicta FC atomweight champion Jinh Yu Frey in a preliminary strawweight clash. As Frey attempted to defend a takedown, Hansen was able to transition to an armbar and eventually elicit the submission at the 2:26 mark of Round 3.
