Hall of Famer B.J. Penn is set to make UFC 237 his farewell bout, according to sources close to the fighter. The Hawaiian legend will face Clay Guida on May 11 at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Penn held his last camp in Brazil with the Nova Uniao team. “The Prodigy” is currently mired in a seven-bout winless streak that dates back to February 2011. Most recently, the 40-year-old Penn suffered a first-round submission loss against Ryan Hall at UFC 232. The former lightweight and welterweight champion owns a career mark of 16-13-2.
Guida, meanwhile, last appeared at UFC 225 last June, when he was choked out int he opening stanza by Charles Oliveira. Prior to that defeat, “The Carpenter” had earned back-to-back triumphs over Erik Koch and Joe Lauzon. The 37-year-old Illinois native is 34-18 as a professional overall.
UFC 237 will feature a strawweight championship clash between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade, while Jose Aldo will square off against rising featherweight talent Alexander Volkanovski in another featured bout.
