Mike Whitman Nov 12, 2011
According to a local news report, two Georgia-based fighters were
found dead in their home on Wednesday as a result of a
murder-suicide.
Atlanta NBC-affiliate Channel 11 published the news Thursday. According to the report, 28-year-old Wilbur Carl Smith shot and killed girlfriend and fellow fighter Maryellen Cano before turning the gun on himself.
Cano’s father reportedly filed a missing person report on Wednesday evening after two days went by without hearing from his daughter. According to Channel 11, police responded to the request and arrived at Cano and Smith’s residence Wednesday night. Though Cano’s vehicle was parked in the driveway, police received no response from inside the house. Upon contacting the property manager, officers found the couple deceased inside.
Cano, 32, fought only once as a professional, making quick work of her opponent at Wild Bill's Fight Night 29. The Tiger Academy representative finished Linda Cunningham with a rear-naked choke in just 1:51 at the July 24 event.
