Johnson Replaces Wineland, Meets Page at WEC 52

AMC Pankration standout Demetrious Johnson has stepped in on three weeks’ notice to face top 10-ranked Damacio Page in a bantamweight fight at WEC 52 on Nov. 11 in Las Vegas.

Johnson replaces former WEC bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland, who was forced to bow out of the bout due to a lingering shoulder injury. News of the change was first reported by MMAFighting.com.

Nicknamed “Mighty Mouse,” the 5-foot-3 Johnson is comes in on the heels of a unanimous decision victory over Nick Pace at WEC 51 on Sept. 30. The win was the first decision victory for Johnson, who had notched finishes in his five previous professional MMA bouts. The only loss of his career came at WEC 48 in April, where he dropped a unanimous decision to Brad Pickett.

Page has been sidelined by injuries for nearly a year, with his last fight being a 62-second submission win over Will Campuzano at WEC 43 in October 2009. It was Page’s seventh victory in his last eight fights, dating back to March 2007. The Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts team member -- who has the colorful nickname "The Angel of Death" -- has beaten Scott Jorgensen and Marcos Galvao during his time in the WEC. Page’s only setback during his hot streak came at the hands of former WEC 135-pound champion Brian Bowles, who went on to win the title in his next fight.

WEC 52 is scheduled to be headlined by a clash between former featherweight champion Urijah Faber -- who makes his 135-pound debut -- and top 10 bantamweight Takeya Mizugaki. Also on the card is a featherweight bout between Josh Grispi and Erik Koch, and a bantamweight showdown between former title challenger Joseph Benavidez and Wagnney Fabiano.
