"Jacare" Souza has signed a multi-fight deal to compete in the
middleweight ranks of Strikeforce, the promotion announced on
Wednesday.
Souza (10-2), who is also a main attraction for the Dream promotion in Japan, is expected to debut for Strikeforce this fall.
A multi-time world jiu-jitsu champion, Souza’s key victories have revolved around Dream’s 2008 middleweight grand prix, where the Brazilian earned a decision over Jason "Mayhem" Miller and submitted Croatian striker Zelg Galesic. Gegard Mousasi knocked the 29-year-old Souza out in the tournament’s finals.
Souza’s rivalry with Miller resumed at Dream 9 last May, where the pair vied for the promotion’s vacated middleweight title. However, Miller kicked and cut a downed Jacare, and the bout was ruled a “no contest.” Jacare and Miller are expected to meet a third time in the fall.
