Boxing: ‘Canelo’-Golovkin MW Title Fight Official for Sept. 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas

Well, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White was right about one part of the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor negotiation: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) are bound for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Monday on ESPN's “SportsCenter,” Golden Boy Promotions frontman Oscar de la Hoya announced that the hotly-anticipated middleweight showdown between Canelo and “GGG” will emanate from the T-Mobile Arena on Sept. 16.

“Keep in mind everybody wanted this fight. It’s the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas,” said De la Hoya. “So everybody wants to go to Vegas, have a great time, watch a great fight with GGG and Canelo. I mean, it’s gonna be a trainwreck.”

The venue decision for Golden Boy, Alvarez's promoter, was ultimately down to the T-Mobile Arena and AT&T Stadium, the home of the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas. However, the Sept. 16 was already a known fact, as it was announced in the ring following Alvarez's May 6 shutout of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., also at the T-Mobile Arena. Immediately following the event, Dana White claimed that the Alvarez-Golovkin fight was bound for the same Las Vegas venue and that a proposed date for the Mayweather-McGregor fight has been “lost” to the 160-pound showdown.

De la Hoya did mention some of the other venues in consideration.

“The offers were just amazing from Madison Square Garden, so I was contemplating it because look, you mentioned right now Muhammad Ali with Joe Frazier, crazy fight. And then obviously my good friend, Jerry Jones, who wanted this fight. I talked to my great friend, Magic Johnson, who wanted to stage the fight at Dodger Stadium. Why not, right?”

Kazakhstan's Golovkin, 35, last defended his quarter of middleweight titles -- the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO crowns – in a 12-round decision over Daniel Jacobs on March 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Canelo-Golovkin, which airs live on HBO, will also be for two other major laurels: Alvarez's Ring Magazine title and the lineal world middleweight championship.
