Torres Submits Azeredo at Jungle Fight

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Promising Nova União newcomer Roni Torres wasn't fazed by the bevy of celebrities in attendance for Jungle Fight Championship 10 at Hotel Windsor's Hall on Barra da Tijuca beach Saturday. Torres (13-1) submitted the internationally experienced Luiz Azeredo (Pictures) (12-8) with a first-round kimura much to the crowd's delight.

The Andre Pederneiras pupil didn't care for striking and closed the gap with Azeredo, taking the bout to the ground where he could impose his game. Torres locked in the shoulder lock and coaxed the tapout from the former Pride star at 4:34 in the first.

Assuerio Silva (Pictures) (14-6) had little difficulty against Terroll Dees (Pictures) (3-3) in his fourth Jungle Fight appearance, taking his less experienced opponent to the mat to pour on punches. Silva submitted Dees with a leglock a cool 1:42 into the first round.

"I'm back to the Jungle. I've always performed well at the event," said Silva. "On the next one, I want to do the main event."

The sole women's bout of the night was also the fastest one. Ediene Gomes knocked Michele Farias down, passed her guard and finished her opponent with an armbar in only 48 seconds.

A standout of Jungle Fight's last edition, Paulo Thiago faced Frenchman Ferrid Kheder (Pictures) in a battle that went the distance. Throughout the three rounds, Thiago (5-0) alternated between solid striking combinations and groundwork. Never in any danger from Kheder (5-3), the Brazilian earned the unanimous decision nod.

Leonardo Peçanha demonstrated a wide range of jiu-jitsu skills in his first round against Pedro Manoel, though his feast didn't last. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu world titlist many times over, Pecanha (6-3) pulled his opponent into guard and attacked with armbars, triangle chokes and omoplatas. Manoel thwarted all of Pecanha's attempts and answered with some ground-and-pound tactics. A tiring Peçanha couldn't get the same results in the next two rounds and Manoel was handed the unanimous decision.

One week after winning in The Glory promotion, Felipe Arinelli (7-7) waged a worthy war against Xavier Foupa-Pokam (Pictures) (17-9). Always seeking to get the action to the ground, Arinelli was dominant at the start, but then the Brazilian started telegraphing his shots and paid for it with multiple knees from Foupa-Pokam. The Frenchman toppled Arinelli in the third round with punches for the TKO stoppage.

The fight between Leonardo Tangeria (2-0) and Paulo Dezenet ended in an unexpected way. After a fast exchange, Tangeria knocked his opponent down and Dezenet quit from an arm injury that occurred during his fall.

In other action, Alexandre Pulga Pimentel (3-0) took Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (Pictures)'s brother Renato (1-1) to a unanimous decision victory, while Alan Frois did the same with Sebastiao Bruno Pinto in the event's opener.
