It's getting hard to keep up with the constantly breaking MMA news
in Brazil. Big events are happening more and more frequently, and
the country, just as it does with soccer, keeps producing new
talent.
One such fighter is Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Demian Maia (Pictures), who was scheduled to face Marvin Eastman (Pictures) in an upcoming UFC. However, the American's injury has left Maia without an opponent.
"This [middleweight] division is full of tough guys, such as
Anderson Silva, Thales Leites (Pictures) and Rich Franklin (Pictures)," said Maia, who's waiting for
word of Eastman's replacement. "There are no easy fights."
Maia, 6-0, was excited to sign with the UFC.
Maia's preparation for his UFC debut has gone well. He's confident that his experience in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and submission competitions will help him in the Octagon.
"Competition is competition," he said. "It does not make a difference. In my academy we have an MMA team that doesn't have a name yet, but we will launch some talent soon."
Firmino-Azeredo Rematch Set for São Paulo
In a rematch of a PRIDE Bushido bout, Luiz Firmino (Pictures) will fight Luiz Azeredo (Pictures) at a blockbuster show scheduled to take place in São Paulo's trade center. Chute Boxe's Azeredo won a split decision over Brazilian Top Team's Firmino in the April 2005 fight.
Called "The One VIP Fighting," the event will be held at the Gazeta Theater on Avenida Paulista. All-star treatment for the fighters is expected, as well as cocktails for the guests and other surprises.
Five MMA fights and two striking fights will take place. Also, a yet-to-be-named Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion will compete in MMA for the first time.

Leonardo Lucio Nascimento shined at the show in his win over the tough Helio Dipp, and Rodrigo Ruiz was also impressive as a late replacement who knocked out Nova União's Roni Torres.

Vanessa Porto (Pictures) challenges Gina Carano (Pictures)
After Gina Carano (Pictures)'s Sept. 15 win over Tonya Evinger (Pictures) in EliteXC, the top female fighter MMA in Brazil challenged her.
Vanessa Porto (Pictures) had beaten Evinger, too, in Fatal Femmes Fighting, and now she wants the American poster girl.
"I watched Gina Carano (Pictures) versus Tonya Evinger (Pictures) on Showtime," Porto said. "I have a message for Gina and EliteXC: Congratulations to Elite XC. They booked a fighter I already beat. I beat Evinger by submission in the first round … and just can't understand how Elite could have invited Evinger instead of me to challenge Gina after that. But it seems Elite promoters were looking for an easier fight for their pretty star. Now we both have beat Evinger. I hope we can meet in the ring in a future show. I guarantee Gina will have a very hard time against me."
