The Brazilian Notebook

September is a busy month in MMA. Events are scheduled all over the world and plenty of Brazilians will compete, both abroad and in their homeland.

As usual this edition of The Brazilian Notebook keeps you updated with what's happening in South America's mixed martial arts hotbed.

Jean Silva (Pictures) loses chance for Cage Rage title

Jean Silva (Pictures) will face UFC veteran Chris Brennan on Sept. 15 at Cage Rage 23.

Brennan, 19-11-1, replaces Masakazu Imanari (Pictures).

"I knew about it on Saturday," Silva told Sherdog.com. "I know (Brennan) is a BJJ fighter, so it's basically the same game as Imanari. I'm still training a lot of submissions here in London."

Silva won't need to cut weight against Brennan because the match will be in lightweight class. The downside, Silva said, is that the bout won't be a title fight now.

After living in Curitiba, Brazil, where he had been training at Chute Boxe's headquarters, Silva has returned to London. Now he represents London Shootfighters, but he still sees himself as a member of Chute Boxe.

"The MMA world has evolved a lot," Silva said. "It's like soccer -- you can be sold or borrowed by another team. (London Shootfighters) offered me a contract I couldn't deny. … I can pay my bills, because the fact of having a salary is wonderful. I have a lot of friends and people who believe in me at Chute Boxe, and every time I travel to Brazil I will train there."

The lightweight said he is a commodity in England because he has fought so much in the country.

"Actually, I've been fighting here since before people had any idea what MMA was about," Silva said. "I have 22 fights in (England), 13 being at Cage Rage."

Thiago Tavares (Pictures) ‘breathes' Tyson Griffin (Pictures)

Thiago Tavares (Pictures) is training diligently in Rio de Janeiro for his Sept. 22 bout against Tyson Griffin (Pictures) at UFC 76.

"I'm thinking about Tyson Griffin (Pictures) all day long," the 22-year-old lightweight said. "I lunch Tyson Griffin (Pictures). I train Tyson Griffin (Pictures). I dinner Tyson Griffin (Pictures). I play video games against Tyson Griffin (Pictures). He is my goal … and if God wishes, I will win."

Cassino FC expects big turnout

Cassino Fight Club IV hopes to attract at least 8,500 fans to the new Arena Poliesportiva Amadeu Teixeira in Manaus, Brazil, on Sept. 15.

To reach that figure, the organization has planned an aggressive card, lower-priced tickets and a marketing strategy that includes a partnership with TV Amazonas, which is affiliated with the largest TV network in Brazil, Rede Globo.

Cassino representative Samir Nadaf cited the success of the promotion's April 21 event as evidence the goal will be reached.

"At our last event, we built an octagon for the weigh-ins inside the biggest mall in Manaus, and we stopped the (mall's) business," Nadaf said. "We brought in 3,000 people and 700 in the VIP area. Now we're taking an even larger step. … The city is in party mode, and we will bring more than 8,000 people to this next event."
