RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Leonardo Santos (Pictures) iced Christian Lopes with an
arm-triangle choke in a cool 36 seconds to punctuate a quick night
of Shooto "Brazil 7" bouts Sunday at the Upper Gym. Promoted by
Nova Uniao leader André Pederneiras, only two of the ten bouts made
it out of the second round, while the Brazilians went 3-0 in a
challenge against their Argentinean counterparts.
"I knew my opponent was good on his foot, but had only a reasonable ground [game]," said Santos. "So, I didn't want to give him any chances and I knocked him down, played my game and got the finish."
In contrast, Eduardo
Dantas (Pictures) had a bit more work ahead of him
against Juan Tessane.
Dantas began aggressively and Tessane was on the defensive for most
of the first round.
In the second set, Dantas knocked Tessane down, softened him with punches and then finished the Argentinean with a rear-naked choke at 2:33.
André Tererê kicked off the "Brazil vs. Argentina" bouts with a feverish battle against Christian Mieto. Tererê, always searching for the knockout, floored Mieto three times in the first round. The last one stopped the clock at 3:12.
Pederneiras protégé Hernani Perpetuo (Pictures) had a standout performance against José Carlos. After two knockdowns, Perpetuo finished his opponent with a well-placed rear-naked choke at 1:25.
Carlos Eduardo dos Santos got knocked down by Marcelo Viera, but managed back to the feet where he returned the favor and earned a TKO stoppage in 1:40.
Hudson Rocha (Pictures) controlled ground position against Carlos Alberto, but when the pair returned to standing, Alberto turned the tables. Knocking Rocha down, Alberto coaxed out the TKO referee stoppage at 4:13.
The first round between Marcus Maciel and Leandro Sete Bala was even with both athletes earning their moments. In the second round, Maciel took more initiative and knocked Bala down, passed his guard and finished him with an anaconda choke at 2:50.
Dileno Lopes delivered one of best performances of the night, shutting out Rafael Soldado from start to finish. Dileno knocked Soldado down and attempted both triangle and arm-triangle chokes before moving to mount where he punched away. However, it was a deep rear-naked choke that finished his opponent at 4:20 of the first round.
Zeilton Rodrigues duked it out with Marlon Moraes at the top of their bout, before Moraes took it to the ground to get in some recovery time. When the fight moved back to its feet, Moraes nailed Rodrigues in the head with a high kick, and then followed him to the mat to try and finish with punches.
In the second round, Moraes again knocked Rodrigues down and began to ground-and-pound. Rodrigues wasn't ready to give up though. Fighting from his back, Rodrigues found the reversal and began to swing into Moraes' guard to earn a stoppage at 1:45 of the second round.
In the night's opener, Maicon William grounded Rafael Lima, then latched on the armbar for the 1:14 finish.
"I knew my opponent was good on his foot, but had only a reasonable ground [game]," said Santos. "So, I didn't want to give him any chances and I knocked him down, played my game and got the finish."

"The fight was hard," said Dantas. "If I had trusted my standup
more, I could have been better. But I did my homework and finished
well in the second round."
