RIO DAS OSTRAS, Brazil, Oct. 27 -- MMA Sports Combat held its
inaugural event Saturday, filling the main gym in Rio das Ostras
and thrilling spectators with strong performances by Flavio
Serafim, Andre Santos
(Pictures) and local fighter Paulo
"Rambinho."
José Adriano (Orions) opened the event with an aggressive pace against Fernando Consendei (Fight CO). He took Consendei down and worked from the top for two rounds. However, Consendei rallied in the third, only to fall short when Adriano took his back and secured a rear-naked choke.
Pablo Pack (Clube da Luta) used the main weapon of his coach,
Alexandre "Pequeno" Nogueira, to defeat Felipe Mello (Art Combat):
the guillotine. Early in the fight Pack grounded and pounded his
opponent. Then, after the fight returned to feet, he pulled guard
and squeezed on a well-adjusted guillotine choke that forced Mello
to quit.
Marcos Motta (Fight Club) was slightly better on the feet in a busy fight against Emerson (BTT). In the second round, however, Emerson applied a perfect armbar for the win.
Flavio Serafim (Fight CO) entertained the audience with his showing against Alessandro Tiolo (Black House). In a battle from the start, Serafim used his good grappling game to dominate his opponent, who was trying to defend on the ground and finish the fight on the feet.
Tiolo had some good moments when Serafim grew tired, but he failed to put him away. As a result, Serafim resumed punishing his foe on the mat and earned the decision.
Eduardo Felipe (Gordo JJ) needed his jiu-jitsu to beat Fabiano Lucas (Black House) in the third round. Starting well, Lucas scored a takedown and tried to control the fight on the ground, dropping good strikes and controlling his opponent. Felipe, however, did not give up and eventually found a fight-ending armbar from the guard.
The heavyweight duel of the night was between Samuel "Monstro" (Black House) and André "Batata" (Orions). After he began the fight with a stomp, Batata had to defend from his back on the ground until he reversed the position and turned on his aggression.
In the second round, however, Monstro neutralized Batata and finished him with a series of punches for a TKO.
The tough Diego Braga (Gordo JJ) used all of his experience in Muay Thai and MMA to defeat young Franciney Farinazzo (Orions). Avoiding a standup fight, Farinazzo sought the clinch. Braga, though, fought calmly and dominated through the second round, when he took his adversary's back and armbarred him.
Fernando Paulon (BTT) showed an extremely good ground game against "Chatubinha" (RFT). He controlled the first two rounds with his jiu-jitsu, taking Chatubinha down, taking his back and mounting him several times. Chatubinha defended well, however, and escaped the dangerous positions.
In the third round, the RFT fighter tried to finish the fight on feet. Chatubinha connected with good punches and then nearly secured an arm-triangle choke. Although tired, Paulon escaped and took Chatubinha down, which helped him regain his prior advantage and win the decision.
Andre Santos (Pictures) (RFT) showed why he is considered one of the major up-and-comers in Brazil by beating the tough Peruvian Iberico "El Toro" (Club of Fraud). In a balanced fight frequently fought in the clinch, Santos was better on the feet before winning via arm triangle.
The arena became a cauldron when local fighter Paul "Rambinho" (Black House) took on Bruno Azevedo (BPT). Aware that he could not disappoint the hometown audience, Rambinho executed a takedown and worked well on the ground. He used good positioning and a series of punches to finish Azevedo in the first round.
In the only Muay Thai fight of the night, Cleber "Hoost" stopped Gustavo Kuhn.

Batuta recovered, but Mello still dominated with good takedowns and
