The
Ultimate Fighting Championship on Sunday returned to Germany
for the sixth time -- it was its first visit since 2016 -- and
brought with it an event showcasing several fighters making their
Octagon debuts.
UFC Fight Night 134 also featured a record number of decisions,
one of the most lopsided bouts in the promotion’s history and a
vicious finisher on a mission for gold in a new weight class.
SOMETIMES THESE THINGS HAPPEN IN MMA: With 10 decisions, UFC Fight Night 134 tied five other shows for the most decisions at an event in UFC history: UFC 169, UFC Fight Night 36, UFC Fight Night 84, UFC Fight Night 101 and UFC Fight Night 121.
EXHAUSTING STRETCH: From the beginning of the Fox Sports 1 prelims until the main event, nine consecutive fights went to a decision. It marks the longest stretch of consecutive decisions on a single card in UFC history.
PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE AND PERSPIRATION: In his 15th appearance with a major promotion -- that includes nine fights in the UFC, four in Strikeforce and two in Bellator MMA -- Anthony Smith finally earned a spot in the main event. Previously, Smith had only fought on a major promotion’s main card at five separate events but never even as high as the co-headliner.
BORN TO KILL: Smith has finished his opponent in 27 of his 30 wins for a finish rate of 90 percent. Fifteen of those stoppages occurred in the first round.
DON’T EVER LOSE YOUR HEART: Smith, who knocked out Mauricio Rua in the first round of their main event, has gone the distance only three times in his 43-fight career. He turns 30 on July 26.
GUNNING FOR ‘SHOGUN’: The last four fighters to stop “Shogun” Rua in the UFC have earned a post-fight bonus for their efforts, and five of the six fighters that have finished him inside the Octagon have banked post-fight bonuses.
Y’ALL MUST’VE FORGOT: Although often remembered for his fantastic 13-fight run in Pride Fighting Championships, Rua has now competed 18 times inside the Octagon. He has fought on the main card in all 18 of his UFC appearances.
TOTAL ANNIHILATION: In three rounds, Aleksander Rakic outstruck Justin Ledet 263-28. The 235-strike differential represents the greatest margin for any UFC light heavyweight fight and ranks among the widest disparities of all-time in any division.
CLEAN SWEEP AND THEN SOME: By earning two scores of 30-24 and a third of 30-25 from the judges, Rakic’s one-sided drubbing of Ledet ranks as the biggest scoring differential in a three-round fight in company history.
TRAPPED IN THE BERMUDEZ TRIANGLE: By putting Davey Grant to sleep with a triangle choke in 59 seconds, Manny Bermudez recorded the fastest technical submission via triangle choke in UFC history. His submission ranks as the third-fastest triangle choke finish inside the Octagon and was only the sixth ever performed by a bantamweight in the UFC.
TRIANGLE MAN HATES PERSON MAN: Bermudez stayed undefeated at 13-0 and pulled off his 10th career submission -- it was his fifth by triangle choke -- when he forced the referee to intervene in his bout with Grant. He has more wins by triangle choke than any other method.
OUR BROTHER ON GUITAR: Emil Meek has walked out to Norwegian rock band Autokarma’s “Fare, Fare Krigsmann” in all three of his UFC appearances, and he also serves as the band’s guitarist. At this event, his fellow bandmates sat in the crowd and sang along as Meek made his walk to the Octagon.
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN: Entering UFC Fight Night 134, Ledet had never suffered a loss (10 fights), Khalid Taha had never lost a decision (13 fights) and Smith had never competed in Europe (42 fights).
WELL, I TRIED TO TELL YOU SO: Making his walk to the cage accompanied by 90s hit “Return of the Mack” by British R&B singer Mark Morrison, Smith became the first recorded fighter in UFC history to win while using the track.
IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM: Damian Stasiak walked out to “Wild Boys” by Duran Duran -- a song known as the longtime walkout anthem for MMA legend Mirko Filipovic. Stasiak has used the song in his last five UFC bouts, dropping his last three while using it.
