Cormier has fought for a UFC title a total of eight times. At UFC 182, he challenged Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship and lost by unanimous decision. When Jones was stripped of the crown, Cormier contended for it against Anthony Johnson. Cormier won and successfully defended the belt against Alexander Gustafsson, Johnson in a rematch and Volkan Oezdemir.
