In a classic striker vs. grappler matchup, the muay Thai stylings of Marina Rodriguez prevailed at UFC Fight Night 194.

Rodriguez survived a couple precarious moments against Mackenzie Dern to earn a five-round verdict in Saturday’s strawweight headliner at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The biggest difference in the fight was Rodriguez’s ability to keep the majority of the action upright, where she was able to pick Dern apart with a variety of strikes. That makes three straight Octagon triumphs for Rodriguez, who is beginning to distinguish herself among contenders at 115 pounds.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 194, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

95: Significant strikes by which Rodriguez outlanded Dern in the 25-minute affair. Rodriguez outlanded her foe 24 to 1 in Round 1, 45 to 8 in Round 3, 37 to 15 in Round 4 and 37 to 11 in Round 5. Dern held a 10-to-1 advantage in significant strikes in the second frame. Rodriguez was far more accurate, landing at a 51 percent rate compared to Dern’s 28 percent.

.120: Takedown success rate for Dern, who landed just one of her eight attempts in the bout.

7:21: Total control time for Dern, which includes a notable 4:21 in Round 2, when she was able to get Rodriguez to the canvas early and transition to multiple dominant positions.

39: Significant body strikes for Rodriguez. By comparison, Dern landed just four. Rodriguez also held a 33-to-4 edge in significant leg strikes and a 20-to-1 advantage in significant clinch strikes. Dern was able to outland her foe 12 to 1 in significant ground strikes.

115: Significant strikes landed by Randy Brown in a unanimous verdict over Jared Gooden in the welterweight co-main event. That ranks as a career best in 12 UFC bouts for “Rude Boy.” His previous best of 89 came in a win against Bryan Barberena at UFC Fight Night 154. Gooden landed 82 significant strikes in defeat.

81: Significant head strikes landed by Brown. Gooden landed just 19 but did hold a 35-to-9 edge in significant leg strikes.

24: Fighters in promotion history with 50 or more takedowns, a group Tim Elliott joined when he landed a takedown on Mattheus Nicolau in the first frame of their flyweight scrap. It wouldn’t be enough for Elliott, however, as he faded down the stretch in a unanimous decision defeat against his Brazilian opponent.

1: Takedown landed in 10 attempts by Elliott overall. Nicolau, meanwhile, landed his lone takedown of the fight.

.580: Significant striking accuracy for Nicolau, who landed 64 of 109 attempts. While Elliott had a high output, he was far less accurate, as he landed 70 of 215 attempts — a 32-percent clip.

93: Significant strikes landed by Mariya Agapova in a third-round submission win over Sabina Mazo, a career best in three UFC appearances and one bout on Dana White’s Contender Series. That total included a 32-to-13 edge in body shots and the second knockdown of her UFC tenure.

96: Significant strikes landed by Chris Gutierrez in a split-decision triumph over Felipe Colares at bantamweight. By comparison, Colares landed just 41. Gutierrez was also the far more accurate striker, landing at a 66 percent clip compared to Colares’ 27 percent.

4: Consecutive victories for Alexander Romanov, tying him with Tom Aspinall and Chris Daukaus for the fourth-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s heavyweight division. Romanov defeated Jared Vanderaa via second-round technical knockout on Saturday.

45: Signficant ground strikes — out of 56 total significant strikes landed — by Romanov, who landed five of seven takedowns and secured 6:31 of control time in victory. Vanderaa didn’t land a single significant ground strike or takedown in the fight.

8: Career KO/TKO defeats for Ontiveros, who fell to Kevin Holland via slam KO at UFC Fight Night 181 in his Octagon debut. Advertisement
