Brazilian Notebook: Fury FC Crowns Winner

Rousimar Palhares captured the Fury FC 5 middleweight tournament title on Dec. 6, establishing himself as the top 185-pound Brazilian not yet fighting abroad.

The Brazilian Top Team-trained fighter defeated two tough opponents in one night.

In the first fight, Palhares submitted Fabio Negao (Pictures) in less than three minutes with an ankle lock. In the final he faced Daniel Acácio, who had stopped Andre Mikito.

Right at the beginning of the championship fight, Palhares connected with some good blows on his opponent and scored a takedown. He then secured another ankle lock, submitting Acácio at 2:45 of the first round.

After the victory, the champion refused being labeled No. 1 in Brazil.

"All of them who came up here are the best," he said, commenting on Murilo Bustamante (Pictures), Bebeo Duarte, Sergio Cunha and all of Brazilian Top Team. "We have four. My congratulations to all of them."

Fabio Maldonado (Pictures) electrified the audience Dec. 8 at Predador FC 8.

In the main event, he knocked out his opponent in the first round. Overall, the show was considered one of the best editions yet.

Vieira Wins in Capital Fight

Milton Vieira (Pictures) exhibited a great performance at the Dec. 14 Capital Fight in Brasilia. The BTT fighter defeated Jorge Britto via decision after dominating the three-round fight. The event summoned athletes from Chute Boxe, Black House and several fighters from the region.

Midway FC Hosts International Card

The fifth edition of Midway FC International will take place Saturday in Belém, Brazil. The event will have several attractions, such as a bout between local athlete Walter Broca and Cuban fighter Hugo Aphonso and a match between the American Geno Vitaly and local fighter Paulão.



"MMA is a sport that the people from Belém do Pará loves," said Caio Leyser, organizer of Midway FC International. "The main fighters of our state will be in action, and the presence in the audience of professionals such as Lyoto, Shogun and Ninja will further increase our event. In 2008 we'll do four stages of Midway FC International and will bring the event to other states."

Xande Ribeiro Captures Super Challenge Grappling

While already promoting one of the big MMA events in Brazil, entrepreneur Paul Vasconcellos has now turned to grappling shows as well. He promoted the first edition of the Super Challenge Grappling on Dec. 8.

With Rickson Gracie (Pictures) as the technical coordinator, the event included international athletes such as Demian Maia (Pictures), Antoine Jaoude (Pictures) and Wanderlei Silva (Pictures)'s jiu-jitsu coach, André Galvão.

But it was Xande Ribeiro, former world BJJ absolute champion, who ended up with the title after defeating four opponents.

‘Babalu' and ‘Ximu' Scheduled for San Diego

Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Gustavo "Ximu" Machado are confirmed for the Jan. 12 World Cagefighting Organization event in San Diego, Calif. Sobral will face Vernon "Tiger" White, and Machado will face Joe Riggs (Pictures).

"I am training a lot for this fight and I hope I present well and get one more victory," Machado said.

Azevedo Hoping for Big Year in 2008

After ending the year with three consecutive wins -- two of them being great performances in the MTL -- Luciano Azevedo (Pictures) should return to the international scene in 2008.

His manager, Mauricio Costa, believes that Azevedo will be back in the spotlight during the first half of next year.

"Luciano showed this year and proved that he is the best active lightweight in Brazil," Costa said. "In 2008 he has everything to continue on that path and promises to be included among the top in the world."

Prime MMA to Hold Four Events in 2008

After the success of its first edition, Prime MMA announced its schedule for 2008. Four shows will be in Salvador, with the first already scheduled for March 13 and some fights already set:

Vanessa Porto (Pictures) is confirmed to meet Roxanne Modafferi (Pictures) in February for the Fatal Femmes Fighting lightweight title. With two wins in the event, Porto has garnered international attention and has been well paid. Speculation is that in 2008 she could face Gina Carano (Pictures). … Antoine Jaoude (Pictures) has trained hard for his Dec. 29 IFL heavyweight title fight against Roy Nelson (Pictures). He is intensifying his training at Ruas Vale Tudo with Pedro Rizzo (Pictures) and company. "I am training well and I am hoping to get this victory and close 2007 with the gold," he said. … Thiago Jambo signed a contract with EliteXC. The fighter, who trains daily with the Nogueira brothers in Rio de Janeiro, promised to be among the highlights of the event in 2008.
