UFC Fight Night 33: The Forum Threads
If Mauricio “Shogun” Rua wanted to make a statement, he seems to have accomplished his mission.
The former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder quieted calls for his retirement, as he knocked out James Te Huna with a counter left hook in the UFC Fight Night 33 “Hunt vs. Bigfoot” co-main event on Friday at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Australia. “Shogun” sealed it 63 seconds into round one, throwing the brakes on the first two-fight losing streak of his career.
In the weeks leading up to the match, concern over how much Rua had left to offer appeared to grow. Even UFC President Dana White addressed the matter. “Shogun,” who evened his UFC record at 6-6, has talked about a potential move to the middleweight division. Wherever he lands next, his highlight-reel knockout against Te Huna will allow him to do so with some much-needed momentum behind him.
Rua’s performance at UFC Fight Night 33 spawned a number of threads on the Sherdog.net forums:
