Showtime Championship Boxing Weigh-ins: Jesus Cuellar & Abner Mares on Target
An intriguing featherweight title fight is on tap for Saturday
night as Showtime Championship Boxing will televise a terrific card
from the USC Galen Center in Los Angeles. Headlining the bill will
be Jesus Cuellar taking defending his WBA 126-pound for the second
time against Abner Mares.
At Friday’s weigh-ins, both men came in right on the money for their title tilt, giving the event the go-ahead. Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs), a world champion in three different weight classes, came in at 124 pounds. Cuellar, who won his title last June when he knocked out Vic Darchinyan, came in at 126 pounds.
The co-feature will see Jermall Charlo (24-0, 18 KOs) defend his IBF super welterweight belt against surging contender Julian Williams. The bout could wind up being a sleeper candidate for fight of the year and the contender came in right on the division’s weight limit of 154 pounds. Charlo, meanwhile, was a few ounces lighter at 153.4 pounds.
The action will go down live on Showtime beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
