Showtime Boxing Weigh-in Results: Frampton, Santa Cruz on Point for Huge Rematch
The last time Carl Frampton and Leo Santa Cruz both stepped into
the ring, it was to wage war against each other and did they ever.
The featherweights tore into each other for 12 grueling rounds in
what was one of the top three fights in the sport of boxing in
2016, one of the best the Sweet Science has seen in years. On
Saturday night inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the
two will collide for a second time; to say the boxing world is
abuzz with excitement would be an understatement.
Frampton (23-0, 14 KOs) rocked Santa Cruz early in their awesome thrill ride back in July, but the Belfast native couldn’t put him away. From there, they stood toe-to-toe throughout the remainder of the bout and Frampton came out on top via majority decision. At Friday’s weigh-ins, both men were spot-on and primed for what could be the best fight of ’17; they both weighed in on the money.
Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KOs) is on a quest to regain the WBA
featherweight title he lost to Frampton in Barclays Center last
year. The Mexican, who also has captured the WBC super bantamweight
and IBF bantamweight championships, came in at 125 pounds.
Frampton, who also has held the IBF super bantamweight belt,
followed suit and checked in at 125 pounds as well.
The co-feature will see terrific, yet relative unknown Dejan Zlaticanin (22-0, 15 KOs) defend his WBC lightweight crown against Oxnard, Calif.-based fighter Mikey Garcia. One of the best unbeaten fighters in the game, Garcia (35-0, 29 KOs) came in ready at 134.5 pounds , as did while the Montenegro native.
Showtime will televise the action live beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
