PBC on Spike Weigh-in Results: Danny Garcia, Samuel Vargas on Weight
Boxing returns to Spike on Saturday night with an intriguing
welterweight matchup headlining the bill. Reigning WBC 147-pound
champion Danny Garcia will take on Samuel Vargas in a non-title
affair over 10 rounds with lightweights Javier Fortuna and Omar
Douglas fighting in the co-feature.
The fight will take place in Garcia’s hometown of Philadelphia and he’s excited to be bringing the action to his biggest supporters.
“It’s amazing to be fighting in my city with my home base there to
support me,” Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) said at the final pre-fight
press conference. “This is a great opportunity for me. Giving back
is very important to me and my family. I have my whole family,
including my daughter Philly here with me. It just adds to the
excitement leading up to the fight.”
But all the focus on Garcia is the mega fight he has lined up in March against fellow unbeaten world champion Keith Thurman. People have criticized the Garcia taking on Vargas, whom many consider nothing more than a tune-up opponent, but “Swift” says he’s being intelligent about the decision to take a fight in between.
“I know people are excited about the Thurman fight,” Garcia said. “I understand that and I’m going to be pumped up for that one too. But I’m not looking past anybody. I’m fully focused on putting on a show at home and doing what I have to do to beat Vargas.”
Vargas (25-2-1, 13 KOs) is a Colombian native now living in Canada. He’s a huge underdog Coming in and he’s embraced that role, though he’s not going to come into the ring and let Garcia do whatever he wants.
“This is a fight that I have to be 100 percent ready for,” Vargas remarked at the presser. “I have to mentally be prepared for battle. I’m looking for the upset that night. Everyone wants to see Danny fight Keith Thurman, but I’m looking to make myself known. Don’t miss it, because it’s going to be a memorable one.”
At Friday’s weigh-ins, Vargas tipped the scale at 145.7 pounds while Garcia came in at 146.6. The action will go down live on Spike beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT from within the Liacouras Center.
Javier Fortuna (132.9) vs. Omar Douglas (132.1)
Jarrett Hurd (153) vs. Ionut Dan Ion (153.1)
Kyrone Davis (158.6) vs. Carlos Gabriel Ozan (155.7)
