Gerges-Inocente, Featherweight Tourney Added to Glory 33
Glory, the world’s premiere kickboxing promotion, announced
Thursday that a heavyweight duel between Hesdy Gerges and Guto
Inocente will serve as the co-feature bout at Glory33 “New Jersey.”
The event will go down on Sep. 9 at Sun National Bank Center in
Trenton, N.J. and will be anchored by the Glory heavyweight
championship bout between reigning titleholder Rico Verhoeven and
Anderson “Braddock” Silva.
Gerges (49-16-1, 23 KOs) is currently ranked No. 5 in Glory’s heavyweight division. “Fighterheart” captured the It’s Showtime heavyweight crown in 2010 when opponent Badr Hari was disqualified but lost his belt two years later when he was knocked out by Daniel Ghita. The Egyptian has become a fan favorite over the years and has come close to winning a few other world titles and has taken on the likes of Semmy Schilt (twice), Verhoeven (twice), Errol Zimmerman and Carter Williams, among others. He is coming off a split decision loss to Ismael Londt at Glory 31 in June.
Inocente, meanwhile, has captured several gold medals in kickboxing
tournaments across his native Brazil. The UFC and Strikeforce
veteran is 2-0 in the Glory ring, with his last triumph coming at
Glory 30 in May when he edged Brian Douwes over three rounds.
Inocente (31-7, 17 KOs) hasn’t yet taken on the level of opposition
that Gerges has, but a win could catapult him into the upper
reaches of the division.
Glory also revealed that a four-man, same-night Featherweight Contender Tournament will round out the main card. In the first semifinal matchup, recently-dethroned champ Serhiy Adamchuk (33-6, 16 KOs) will look to rebound from his loss to Gabriel Varga at Glory 32 last month when he collides with Giga Chikadze (35-4, 21 KOs). On the other side of the bracket, Korea’s Chibin Lim (69-19, 40 KOs) will take on Matt Embree (37-7, 16 KOs).
Glory 33 will be streamed live on ESPN3 beginning at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.
The Glory 33 SuperFight Series will be anchored by the middleweight championship where Simon Marcus (44-2-2, 24 KOs) will put his title on the line against Jason Wilnis (28-6-, 7 KOs). The SuperFight Series undercard will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. PT.
