Former heavyweight ruler Fedor
Emelianenko will make his feature film debut on Thursday, as
“The
Salamander Key” premieres March 24 in Moscow.
Starring Emelianenko, Michael Madsen and Rutger Hauer, the action film -- previously known as "The 5th Execution" -- was co-produced by Emelianenko's manager and M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelstein.
According to an M-1 press release, the film tells the story of a
group of scientists that disappears on a remote island in Southeast
Asia. When a rescue team is sent in to recover the missing medical
researchers, it becomes apparent that experimental testing was
being conducted on both animals and humans, the result of which may
cause “imminent, grave, global disaster.”
At this time, it is unknown if the film is scheduled to screen outside of Russia.
Once considered the world's greatest heavyweight, Emelianenko has appeared mortal in his last several performances. Suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, “The Last Emperor” was first submitted by Fabricio Werdum in June and then had his fight with Antonio Silva stopped by the cage-side physician in February. Though Emelianenko hinted at retirement following his most recent defeat, it appears the Russian will return to the cage, perhaps as soon as this summer.
