CM’s No ‘Punk’: Newly Signed Pro Wrestler Wanted to Face Chael Sonnen in UFC Debut
If Phil Brooks had his way, he would have fought Chael Sonnen in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut.
While it’s unknown who CM Punk will fight when he finally does set foot inside the Octagon in 2015, it’s also remains a mystery which weight class he will compete in and where he will hone his fighting skills.

“@titoortiz:
@sonnench I heard
@CMPunk wanted to fight
you first to prove to the fans he can fight.” That's true. Texted
me directly.

It remains unclear if Sonnen declined the bout, or if the UFC would even have him back after his two-year ban from the Nevada Athletic Commission. But the situation is further clouded by the fact that Sonnen and Brooks have maintained a very public friendship for quite some time, to the point where the former World Wrestling Entertainment champion was going to walk Sonnen to the cage prior to his fight at UFC on FOX 2.
For the time being, the speculation around Punk and his UFC debut continues to swirl, but if the 36-year-old was willing to fight someone the likes of Sonnen, one can only imagine who he ultimately ends up competing against.
