Andres Gutierrez Suffers Injury, Saturday Bout Against Carl Frampton Scrapped
After issues on the scale and an unfortunate last-minute injury,
the intriguing showdown between Carl Frampton and Andres Gutierrez
has been canceled.
Frampton (23-1, 14 KOs) was looking to back on track since losing his WBA world featherweight title to Leo Santa Cruz by nabbing a win over Gutierrez. The two were slated to collide in a WBC 126-pound title eliminator at SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on Saturday. However, “The Jackal” came in at 127 pounds, thus preventing him from becoming the No. 1 contender for champion Gary Russell Jr.’s belt with a victory, though Gutierrez was still eligible as he came in at 125.5 pounds.
Unfortunately, to make matters worse, Gutierrez (35-1-1, 25 KOs) suffered an injury from an undisclosed accident a few hours after the weigh-ins and was deemed unable to fight. Various reports around the boxing world suggest that the Mexican slugger slipped and fell in the shower, but the Gutierrez camp has not released a statement on the matter.
The fight was slated to be streamed live on Showtime’s YouTube and Facebook Live outlets on Saturday afternoon in the U.S.
